Pen and Joe chose Hedsor House for both their ceremony and celebration, bringing their wedding together in one elegant setting.
The setting for a Hedsor House wedding
One of the things I enjoy about returning to Hedsor is that the house never has to be photographed in exactly the same way. Its architecture provides so much character: the Centre Hall’s domed ceiling and mezzanine balcony bring a wonderful sense of scale, while the Ballroom’s original wood panelling adds warmth and richness. These are very different settings within the same house, each offering its own possibilities for photographs.
Hedsor House is in Buckinghamshire, and its interiors give a wedding gallery a strong sense of place. I enjoy the contrast between the height of the Centre Hall and the warmer character of the Ballroom. A photograph that includes the architecture can help someone looking through the gallery understand the setting before a closer image brings them back to the people.
For Pen and Joe, choosing the house for both parts of their wedding gave those surroundings a continuing role. This was the place where they married and the place where they celebrated afterwards. I wanted the photographs to hold on to that connection, so that the house felt like part of their wedding memories rather than simply an impressive background.

Country-house wedding portraits with a personal feeling
For Pen and Joe’s story, the setting provides a classic country-house backdrop without needing to become the whole story. My approach to wedding photography is always to balance the wider picture with something more personal: photographs that show the place, alongside images that bring the attention back to the couple.
What makes photographing a couple in a grand house interesting is finding the right scale for each picture. Sometimes the surroundings deserve room in the frame; sometimes a portrait works best when almost everything else falls away. I like a wedding gallery to have both, giving the setting its place while leaving the couple at the centre.
That was the thread I wanted to follow with Pen and Joe. Their choice of Hedsor brought elegance to the story, and the photographs needed to keep a personal feeling within it. Returning to a venue is always different for that reason. The architecture may be familiar, but the wedding belongs to a new couple, and the pictures should belong to them too.

Ceremony and celebration in one place
Having the ceremony and celebration at the same venue also meant there was no journey between those two parts of the day. The wedding could move from the formal significance of the ceremony into the celebration without leaving Hedsor behind.
A ceremony and reception at one venue give a wedding a particular continuity. With Pen and Joe there was no departure for another setting between getting married and celebrating. The next chapter could begin in the same place, and the gallery could follow the change in occasion while keeping a consistent sense of where everything happened.
For anyone drawn to a Hedsor House wedding, that is part of the appeal I see as a photographer: one place can offer a varied collection of images without a journey to a separate portrait location. Pen and Joe’s story brings that idea back to the people it is for. Beautiful surroundings are most rewarding to photograph when they help a couple remember their own celebration.
A house like this brings a sense of occasion to a wedding, but the photographs should still feel personal. That balance—beautiful surroundings, thoughtfully composed portraits and space for the day to unfold—is what makes a Hedsor House wedding such a pleasure to photograph.
